Making tourist places accessible to everyone is a work between society and the Government, and one of the greatest examples in our country is the Blue Flag distinction, which has been awarded to several beaches throughout the Mexican Republic.
One of them is Playa Corumel in Baja California Sur. This beach obtained its distinction in 2016 and was awarded by Pronatura, which works with the European Foundation for Environmental Education, which is responsible for deciding who is awarded the Blue Flag. It represents a commitment of users to the beaches and the environment. And to obtain it you must work under 33 criteria, focused on:
- Information and Environmental Quality.
- Water Quality.
- Management and Environmental Management.
- Security and Services.
When a beach has this recognition, we can ensure that our older adults will be able to carry out their activities with ease, since one of the criteria focuses on including spaces in which it is easy to move around, even if they have orthopedic devices or support devices. In this sense, tourist places must be adapted to the needs of the population, in such a way that totally inclusive spaces are generated, where we can all live together.
Working on it should be a cooperation between companies, society and government, because when tourist complexes are built, one never thinks about how difficult it can be for an older adult to transport themselves in their wheelchair, how tiring it is to go up and down stairs, the fear of entering a pool or simply performing basic needs. That is why we must demand that recreation spaces be improved, because only in this way will our older adults be able to spend quality time.
Let us not forget that maintaining the Blue Flag distinctive is everyone's job, as we must ensure that we keep our beaches clean, follow the codes of conduct and follow the instructions given to us by the workers to maintain safety. I hope that this distinction manages to promote gerontological tourism, since we often forget that our older adults also deserve and need to spend time having fun and what better way to do it than enjoying the natural landscapes that our country offers us.
