Today, each and every one of us must work for a society for all
ages, and intergenerational cooperation will be key to this. This is why the
Ibero-American Federation of Associations of Older Adults
(FIAPAM), holds meetings that are held with the aim that young people and
older adults from Latin American countries and some Europeans strengthen ties
of cooperation in a framework of respect and mutual support. These encounters count.
with the support of national and international professionals who handle the issues
of old age and aging.
In October 2006, the II Encounter was held with great success.
Intergenerational Orizaba, Veracruz (Mexico), the event was organized by the
Universidad del Valle de Orizaba, under the motto "To live or to exist: a reflection
towards dignity, the rights of people and the fight against poverty”.
During the 5 days that the meeting lasted, different conferences were held
lectures and discussion tables, where topics such as discrimination,
the importance of testamentary culture, responsibility and social education,
intergenerational cooperation, the pension situation, the aging of
the population, the creation of public policies, among others.
Most of the topics have focused on the important role of
young people to generate a society for everyone, because they are the
responsible for building an inclusive future with older adults.
There is no doubt that very good results were obtained during the meeting, since
the rapprochement and awareness that young people had with adults
older, helped them to be more aware of the importance of the participation of
older people in their daily life.
In addition, it was agreed that Mexico will continue to work on the fight against
discrimination of this vulnerable sector, developing opportunities for all and
all, because the fact of aging does not mean ceasing to be functional. They are a
example to follow and through their experience young people can build a
better future, because they are the ones who know what is needed to build a
more inclusive society. Treat them with respect, education, tolerance and
integrating them into the family and social environment, will be of vital importance to generate a
active ageing.
